Report by Solidarity with the Victims of All Genocides on the launch of Desmond Fernandes' latest book - Modernity, 'Modernisation' and the Genocide of Kurds and 'Others' in Turkey: '1915' within its Pre-and-Post Historical Periods (Apec Press, Stockholm) - that took place in the Grimmond Room, Portcullis House, London (an annexe to the Houses of Parliament), on 8th June 2010:

Rarely do we set out to question what appear to be unshakable 'facts' without reason. I think anyone who does not have a basic grounding in concepts of the State and the creation of national identities is going to find many of their assumptions seriously and positively challenged by this book. For those familiar with the shaky nature of national identity and borders, the content will be equally valuable and depressing.“In either case, the reader is presented with a detailed and extremely widely sourced collection of material. Starting with the contention that 'genocidal processes have not been the accidental by-products of modernisation or modernity projects' but, as evidenced by numerous examples, have actually been 'central aspects of the process and phenomenon', this study takes the skeletons out of the cupboards of Western 'civilising' nations. We can clearly see in today's global human geography the effect of the genocidal (in the physical, linguistic and cultural sense) colonial projects of the major European powers”.For Alex Fitch: “The continuation of genocidal policies and projects in the post-colonial and neo-colonial period is also amply illustrated. Concepts such as 'development' and 'development aid' take on a whole new appearance when the implications, effects and the acknowledged 'side effects' are taken into consideration. This is illustrated especially well through an examination of Rostow's five-stage economic modernisation theory. 'Development' has also been a key part of counter-insurgency strategy being a key means of implementing social engineering projects under the guise of economic improvement for those affected. The 'development' myth has been one of the key covers under which the Turkish State has pursued its genocidal policy against the Kurdish people since the republics conception.“Desmond Fernandes details, from the earliest moments, the strategies used against Kurds in Turkey (strategies which had already been used successfully to eliminate [the] Armenian population). Central to the programme has been the banning of the Kurdish language, the suppression of Kurdish culture, mass destruction of Kurdish villages, destruction of social structures and aggressive educational projects aimed at creating individuals schooled and raised in the Turkish myth. This has been supplemented with the physical destruction of traditional eco-systems, development projects in the form of intensive hydro projects, and road construction which have assisted in pacification programmes and of course the massacre of Kurdish people. All of these elements are painstakingly detailed with witness accounts from numerous sources. Perhaps most depressing is the active role of many of Turkeys NATO allies in these acts of genocide.“Desmond draws on numerous sources which show the level of collusion between the organs of the United States Government and the Turkish authorities (which in many commentators' eyes were often so closely attached as to be indistinguishable). From the NATO Gladio organisation to the 'open kill' licence of the post September 11th period, the Kurds in Turkey have been considered an 'intractable problem' for which Turkey's war of ethnic cleansing has been an acceptable solution. Desmond includes an important quote by Remzi Kartal of the Kongra-Gel which succinctly summarizes the situation over recent years: 'Politics and in particular the politics of banning and criminalizing our struggle, led by the UK and other EU member states, have played a critical role in the continuation of the military conflict in Turkey and in preventing the democratic political solution of the Kurdish question. European governments have given political, diplomatic, psychological and moral support to the traditional “deny and destroy” politics in Turkey in relation to the Kurdish issue. It is clear that these politics are exacerbating the conflict at a time when an increasing number of people are supporting peace and democracy. A democratic political and negotiated solution based on dialogue is the only way forward to make progress'”.Professor Khatchatur I. Having already tackled, for many decades now, those horrendous issues with consummate objectivity, and having produced many related books and articles, Desmond has written his latest book in a new ‘mode’, delving himself in the labyrinth of the concepts of Modernity and Modernisation in relation with the reality of genocide of the indigenous peoples of Turkey, namely Armenians, Kurds, Assyrians, Greeks, Greek Cypriots, and others.
Assembling, assessing and scrutinizing massive data and notes, Desmond has also drawn parallels with other lands and peoples where oppressive, state terror politics were and are carried out in the name of that same modality, that of Modernity and Modernisation, not forgetting to mention, of course, Civilisation and Democracy.
At this point of my reflections, I must point out that for me the real merit of a book is not only what it says and conveys, but also what it makes me think about, to say what I think and to act upon it. In the few minutes I have for this presentation, allow me then to say the following.
A couple of years back, in a public meeting discussing the legal controversy of the war in Iraq, an Iraqi intellectual raged against the mere utterance of the word democracy, calling it an ‘ugly’ and ‘dirty’ word. He was raging, and rightly so, against the latter-day imperialism’s camouflaged, nay deranged version of democracy that reflects the sterile ethics of bygone colonialism.
Activated with such deformed mantras, the most powerful military power on earth was decimating the heritage of a country and its culture, eventually annihilating over a million of its population, leaving behind nearly a million displaced children and close to five million Iraqi refugees roaming around both in neighboring countries and in their own homeland too. No surprise then that a banal refutation of a warmonger against the Iraqi intellectual’s rage sounded what the formidable John Milton had once warned against such ambivalent refutations, saying: “They who have put out the people’s eyes, reproach them of their blindness.” (Apology, 1648)
It is true that the Turkish Parliament did not grant the vote of consent for the Turkish government to indulge with the so-called coalition forces led by Uncle Sam to invade Iraq. Yet it is also true what the Canadian Action on the Kurdish Conflict in Turkey writes just recently: “Since 1993, over four thousand Kurdish villages have been destroyed and more than seventeen thousand killings of innocent Kurds have been carried out by The Turkish Special Forces. Following the March 29, 2010 municipal elections, fifteen hundred politicians, intellectuals, elected representatives, mayors and human rights activists have been jailed to date. As unacceptable as it is, hundreds of Kurdish children have been killed by the Turkish Security Forces since 1993 and today, about three thousand Kurdish children (aged 6 to 17) are in jail.” It is obvious that the Turkish government relentlessly continues its undeclared war against its own citizens, but failing, nevertheless, to “put out the people’s eyes”, particularly in this case, the Kurdish people’s eyes, or, for that matter, the Turkish people’s eyes too, I tend to believe.
To keep the sanity of our political vision and not lose the focus of our historical perspective, we should also not forget that there was a country, in the Far East, where exactly 35 years ago, the same awesome military power that the world had ever witnessed failed and abysmally so to take the land and its people of millennial cultural heritage “back to the Stone Age”, as vowed then by its megalomaniac military commander. The arrogance of the invading oppressor had wiped out from their own memories the fact that the Vietnamese people were fighting for at least two thousand years to free their land and themselves from successive foreign rules. No wonder then that the United Vietnam and the Vietnamese people prevailed.
Paradoxically, but tellingly so, the Vietnamese people and their internationalist leaders were not hesitating to guide their struggle with the millennial tools of what genuine democracy in essence meant, knowing quite well that once the 16th supreme commander of the country of the invading military force, President Abraham Lincoln had so eloquently envisaged democracy as “The rule of the people, by the people, for the people.” Therein laid the modernity of the liberation struggle of the Vietnamese people.
In fact, the truth of the matter is, somehow not forgotten by the oppressed peoples of the world, that all the battle cries of freedom in the last twenty six centuries or so have been raised in the name of Democracy, whether in Turkey, in the Middle East, in Latin America and in the Far East, not to mention in the advanced capitalist countries where the mantra of profit-at-any-cost, namely globalisation leads the collateral damage inflicted upon language itself. Through their post-modernist, neo-con and neo-liberal abuse the concepts of Democracy, Socialism, Freedom, Modernisation, Human Rights, and what not, are made to lose their essential meanings and made to ‘act’ as their antinomies in real life.
Authorities of all kinds and hues often luxuriate in their prerogative to censor, expurgate, remove or cancel. The above-mentioned Canadian Action, the one referring On the Armenian Issue, writes: “Canada, along with another twenty five countries and over forty U.S. states, have recognized the Armenian Genocide. Turkey, however […] continues to deny and ignore the Armenian Genocide committed by its former regime even to this day.” Censorship has thus become an act of bureaucratic vandalism. It is activated mainly to deny the existence of a phenomenon, especially when the latter reflects and manifests the truthfulness of a painfully culpable historical reality.
No matter. All the censorship and negations notwithstanding, the essential and historical truth remains. Whether freedom from slavery, torture, foreign rule, poverty, from exploitation and child labour, discrimination, or freedom of speech, of conscience and of the human spirit etc., etc., even the screams for free markets, were all raised in the name of democracy, not to mention capitalism, which also came into being through that same tool. The same is true with all the humanist and Internationalist declarations and covenants, such as, just to mention a few, The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, 1948, The Universal Declaration of the Rights of the Peoples, 1976, and most tellingly, The Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, 1948. Furthermore, when the exploitation of democracy by capitalism stretched to the limits of obscuring and hence impoverishing its potentialities, socialism became in its turn the battle cry of all those for whom genuine democracy is the only guarantee for a real and radical change, for a more equitable, tolerant and caring civil society. Therein lays, I believe, the modernisation of the struggle of the oppressed people of our world, particularly when considered the root meaning of the word, which simply means ‘of the present time.’

Dear guests and comrades of the PUK and sister parties,

On behalf of the Chairman of the ARF-Dashnaktsutyun (Armenian socialist party), I salute all participants of the Third General Congress of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan commemorating the party’s 35th anniversary.

As members of the Socialist International both our parties have a number of common ideals and common goals; among others peace, security and understanding between nations.

The theme of the present congress, “Strength through unity,” is not only emblematic for the future well-being of the badly hit communities composing present-day Iraq, but also very important for the relations between the peoples of the region, particularly the Kurdish and Armenian peoples; there is a long common history of those two very ancient entities living side by side during the last three millennia in this part of the world, cradle of the most original world civilizations.

The common experience of our two nations indicates clearly that each time we were opposing each other we have both suffered severely and each time we have cooperated we have been able to defend our rights at least partially. The lack of continuity in a common policy has had catastrophic consequences; Armenians have been subjected to genocide, which is until this date denied recognition by its main perpetrator, whereas Kurds have postponed indefinitely the realization of their right to statehood; this very autonomous region of Kurdistan within Iraq has given at last a hope for real self-government.

The tragic lessons taught by modern history have to guide us in our future relations. Unity is in fact a precondition for strength. Strength is an instrument of war but at the same time an instrument of peace. On the other side peace is a stable condition only if it is based on justice. Let us agree, that our common space has been and is an arena where social, political, historical injustices are still awaiting for a solution.

Therefore, we fully accept the validity of the theme of the present General Congress wishing you a full success.

Turkey’s “Peace and Democracy” (BDP) deputy Nezir Karabas (Bitlis) told a press conference that Turkey should apologize from Armenia and the Kurdish people, according to Vatan.

Karabas recalled the passage of the Armenian Genocide Resolution by the US House Foreign Relations Committee and the operation carried out towards the Kurdistan Worker’s Party in Belgium, saying: “We signify the approval of the Resolution in the US. Openly discussing the past events, Turkey needs to apologize from the Kurds and Armenians on behalf of those who carried these out.”

Armenian relations are undergoing negative transformations, according to Andrey Areshev, deputy director of
Strategic Culture Foundation.

Areshev claim that `anti-Armenian publications in Kurdish media are met more frequently. It's an alarming tendency, Which Should be prevented '.
This is not true, Kurdish media, express themselves very rarely negative about minorities in Kurdistan or Armenia as a neighbor.

There is the current situation is not a single Kurdish media channel that denies the genocide or who tried to disparage the Armenians.
As a Mather of fact it has several Kurdish newspapers an open and formal policy that does not diminish or deny the genocide that took place in 1915 against the Armenians in which Kurdish groups also were involved as perpetrators.
One example is the Kurdish Herald, which has it written into their policies and guidelines that they dont publish materials includin 'denial of the Armenian Genocide, including using attributes that lessen the significance of the event " [SOURCE]

To increase the income gained from the ads, the Turkish State TV (TRT) undertook new steps. According to the Turkish daily "Sabah", an ad in Kurdish will be broadcast on TRT 6, as "Veritas Medya", managing the ad business in the Turkish TRT, considers it necessary.  The ads in different languages and dialects are allowed to be on TRT since 1 January. According to this, Kurdish, Armenian, Arabic and ads in other languages are possible to be broadcast only when a corresponding program in that language is on.

New constitution of Iraqi Kurdistan is a model for the nationality and minority politics of the Near-east

The Society for Threatened Peoples (GfbV) has described the new constitution of the autonomous federal state of Iraqi Kurdistan as a shining model for the nationality politics and the solution of the minority problems in the Near-east. “The rights of all large ethnic groups in Iraqi Kurdistan are expressly anchored, including the right to self-government and freedom of religion”, said the President of the GfbV International, Tilman Zülch, on Tuesday in Göttingen. Smaller communities too have the opportunity to develop. (entfalten”) The regional parliament in Arbil, the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan, passed the draft constitution last week. Now it is for the citizens of the federal state to vote for or against the new constitution at the presidential and parliamentary elections scheduled for 25th July [2009].

The wishes of all nationalities have been respected in the new constitution. Article 15 says: “The people of the federal state of Iraqi Kurdistan is made up of Kurds, Arabs, Turkmens, Chaldaic Aramean Assyrians, Armenians and other citizens of Kurdistan /Iraq.”

Article 35 says: “This constitution guarantees the national, cultural and administrative rights of the Turkmens, Arabs, Chaldaic Aramean Assyrians and Armenians including their right to regional autonomy in the regions and communities in which these ethnic groups form a majority.”

Article 36 guarantees complete freedom of religion also for the Christian denominations and the religious community of the Yezidi.

Apart from the Kurdish and Arab languages Turkmen, New Aramaic and Armenian are recognized as languages of the smaller nationalities. In communities or regions where these form the majority local or regional autonomy is granted. The right to native language instruction is guaranteed by the constitution from primary school to university.

An electoral law for Kurdistan also sets down that eleven of the 111 seats in the regional parliament are reserved for non-Kurdish nationalities:

five seats each for Turkmens and Christians and one seat for the small Armenian ethnic group. For the provincial councils also a comprehensive quota system has been introduced. In Sulaimaniya one seat has been reserved for the Chaldaic Aramean Assyrians, In Arbil there are three seats for the Turkmens, two for the Aramaic-speaking Christians and one for the Armenians, while in Dohuk two seats are reserved for the Aramaic-speaking Christians and one for the Armenians. The smaller peoples will be having as a result of their guaranteed seats in all bodies more representatives than corresponds to their percentage in the total population.

In Kurdistan/Iraq there is today a Turkmen and a New Aramaic school system with 58 Aramaic, 16 Turkmen and two Armenian schools. Both nationalities have media (press, radio, TV and culture institutes) in their languages. There is also a private Turkish university and a theological seminar of the Chaldaic Catholic Church for the training of priests, which following the recent mass flight of Christians from Baghdad was transferred to the Kurd capital of Arbil.

The earliest, irregular and sporadic contacts between Armenians and Kurds date back
approximately to the 11th -12th centuries AD. However, it was not until the movement of Kurds to various parts of Mesopotamia and Armenia had grown into mass migration in the first half of the 16th century that the Armenian-Kurdish relationships became active. Since that period and up until the late 1920s - prior to the Armenian genocide in the Ottoman Empire - these two peoples had been in close and constant contact. As a result, in some Western Armenian provinces a certain Armeno-Kurdish ethno-linguistic situation emerged, characterised by widespread Armenian-Kurdish bilingualism, which could not but leave obvious traces – local dialects of both languages, to some extent, influenced one another.

Judging from the existent linguistic materials, the influence of Armenian on Kurdish appears to
have been much greater as it manifests itself not only in vocabulary, but also in phonetics, and
partially, word formation. Meanwhile, the influence of Kurdish on Armenian, or, more precisely, on the Western Armenian dialects, was limited to vocabulary, and to a lesser degree as well. This can be explained by the fact that Armenian had somewhat become a sort of substrate language for the Kurmanji dialects spoken in the historical Western Armenian areas.

The Armenian-Kurdish linguistic relationships were in the form of direct contacts; they did not
affect other linguistic aspects of public life, and were exemplified only on the dialect level.
The paper presents the analysis of the Armeno-Kurdish linguistic connections, particularly the
interrelations between the Western Armenian dialects and the Kurdish dialects of the same area.

France's ex Prime Minister Michel Rochard said that he believes thatTurkey deserves its place in Europe but, on Turkey's road to acceptanceinto the EU, it has to face three major obstacles, namely the Cyprus,Kurdish and Armenian problems. A conference was held in Paris on the 12 and 13 March at which the formerFrench PM made a speech in which he saidthat their main aim was to abolish customs duties between the rest ofEurope and Turkey and after a while for it, like the rest of Europe,to start using the euro. He believed that Turkey deserved a placein the EU, but that they will immediately have to face their threebiggest problems, the Cyprus, Armenian and Kurdish problems. Rochardsaid the current state of the Cyprus problem is the main cause of theset back.

Turkey has taken the right steps under the United Nationssupervision and by the Turkish Cypriots saying 'Yes' to the referendumwas also one step closer to a set solution and EU acceptance.

Turkey committed Genocide of Armenians at the state level in 1915. Now it is committing Genocide of Kurds, President of Kurdish Council of Armenia Knyaz Hasanov said at a press conference in Yerevan Tuesday. He said Kurds are severely repressed in Turkey and put against
each other. In particular, thousands of Kurds are forcefully sent to Iraq to fight against their compatriots residing in that country.

As regards the participation on Kurds in the massacre of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire, K. Hasanov said those were separate Kurds and not the whole nation.

For his part, Chairman of the Public Organization of Greeks of Armenia 'Patrida' Eduard Polatov said Greek have always been for recognition of Armenian Genocide. 'Armenians and Greek are two nations that have always been subjected to pressures in the territory of Armenia. The
purposeful genocide was against Armenians and Greeks, the real masters of today's Turkey. Instead of repenting, Turkey denies the reality', E. Polatov said.

Dear Readers,

In 2006 I started this site for a deeper understanding between the Armenian and the Kurdish people through a cultural and historical perspective.

Something that I never wrote about the two tragic genocide of Kurds and Armenians have been subjected to, as in the current situation also holds together the peoples. It is not confined to despise a genocide, but very inhumane to support it. Genocide will happen again unless the world community is doing everything in its power to prevent it.

On 16th March 1988, the city of Helebce was bombed in southern Kurdistan, over 5000 people died within hours. The city has become a symbol of genocide in South Kurdistan as assaults from there is so well documented with photography and film.

After about 20 months a total of 182,000 people had been killed, over 1 million civilians were refugees (mostly women and children) and total of 4000 villages, 250 Kurdish cities, 2000 schools and 27 Assyrian churches had been destroyed. The genocide campaign also consisted of deportations, concentration camps and in the current situation over 270 mass graves have been found.

Genocide never happens by accident. It takes time to plan and organize. There are always warning signs. Although the genocide in South Kurdistan came as a surprise to many, there were enough warning signs, both in history and in the present that a genocide threatened.

Iraq's highest court has recognized the former regime's crimes against humanity. Saddam was sentenced to death quickly and never got the blame for the genocide but have Chemical Ali sentenced to death three times for attacks. So, the perpetrators have been taken, the current administration has acknowledged it and historians write about atrocities as genocide. Why then has not the international community recognized the Anfal-campaign as a genocide?

Both Armenians and Kurds need rehabilitation in order to forgive their perpetrators, Armenians have waited over 100 years for relief from today's Turkey, in 1915 over 1.5 million people were massacred, this genocide Hitler to annihilate the Jews during World War II.

All people who are victims of genocide must be rehabilitated so as to initiate a reconciliation process.

Never forget the genocide in southern Kurdistan on 16th March 1988!

Armenian National Congress in France hailed allocating a seat to the Armenians sect in the upcoming parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan region.

That came during a letter from a member of the Armenian National Congress to the Representative of PUK in France. The letter describes the move by the Kurdistan Region Parliament as a key step towards reinforcing fraternity relations between Kurds and Armenians.

Western Armenia website also posted a news report in French on this issue indicating a similar news report by the Kurdistan Region Parliament website.

Kurdistan Region Parliament in the framework of amending the Kurdistan region parliamentary elections law has decided to allocate one seat to the Armenians minority in the framework of quota system for representing the minorities in the Kurdistan region.

The word zozan means today in kurdish the summer pastures. The word is also known in eastern armenian dialects (Bayazit, Mûsh, Van, Maratchkert, Tchatakh) and means as well, a pasture in the mountain.

For the medieval arab authors it is a specific geographical complex inhabited by
Armenians and Kurds. According to Ibn Hawqal (10th century), the master (Sâhib)
of Zûzân was al-Dayrânî, probably Deranik, the armenian king of Vaspurakan
between the lake of Van and Mount Ararat (Ibn Hawqal, vol. 2/348).

The authordoesn’t mention any trace of kurdish presence in that region where christians make
up a great part of the local population. Three hundred years later Yâqût in the Mu’jam
al-Buldân writes about Zûzân : « This is a region located in the center of the

Önce genç erkekleri toplayıp askere aldılar, sonra çoluk, cocuk, kadın, erkek, yaşlı genç yola düşürüldünüz. Nereye gideceğinizi bile bilemeden, binler, on binler, yüz binler İstanbul, İzmir, Ege ve tekmil Anadolu’dan yola çıkarıldınız.

Yozgat ve Çorum tarafından geçirilen kafilelere, Türk köylüleri saldırırken, Türk askeri üç maymunu oynadı. Kestiler Ermenileri, biçtiler, altın dişten, bileziğe velhasıl ne varsa öldürerek aldılar. Aylarca sürdü yürüyüş, ne yıkandılar, ne yediler. Kafile doğuya giderken, ya Türk köylüsünün katliamı, ya da insan gücünün sonuna gelindiğinden sayı giderek azaldı.

Kürdistan’a girişleri de utanç vericiydi. Bugünün korucuları olan o zamanın “Hamidiye Alayları”, çapulcu şerefsizler, bazı Kürt aşiretlerinden devşirilen katiller saldırdılar, Van’da, Kemah’ta ve başka yerlerde Sultan ve İslam Halifesi adına katlettiler. Bunlar utancımızdır. İnsan olduğuna inanan her Kürt utanır bu çapulcu eşkıyaların yaptıklarından.

Kimi bir buçuk milyon, kimi az veya çok gördü bu sayıyı. Ama Türk devleti tarihte ilk planlı programlı katliama imazısını attı. Suriye çöllerine sürülenler koleradan öldüler. Dünya seyretti. Katliam savaşın gölgesinde yapıldı. Aynen Dersim gibi. Dersimliler Ermenileri nispeten korumuşlardı. Ermeniler Alevi olmuş, komşusu Kürtler gibi yaşıyordu. Kemalist devlet: “Sen misin bana Ermeniyi teslim etmeyen?” dediği için Dersim’den öfkesini 70.000 kişi katlederek aldı.

Komşumuz Ermeniler nerede? Kivramız semerci Hüsnü, Agop arkadaşımız? Bir halkı bu şekilde tarih sahnesinden silmek hangi kitaba sığar? Kur’an’da var mı bu insafsızlık? Türk devleti Osmanlıyla övünüyor, ünleniyor, ama Ermeni katliamını görmüyor? Üstelik mağdur, maktul Ermeniyi suçlu yapıyor.

Ben çocukken bizim oralarda Ermeni kiliseleri vardı, hamamları, mezbahaları vardı. Kiliseler yerlebir edildi. Ermeni ve Kürt isimler Türkçeleştirildi. Kızılkilise, Nazımiye yapıldı, Hakis Yayladere ve benim Türkçesini bilmediğim Xarik, Markasor vb ne yapıldılar, bilmiyorum.

Alman faşizmi, Türklerin Ermeni katliamını kendisine örnek aldı. Türkiye, savaşların gölgesinde önce Hıristiyan halkları ortadan kaldırdı, sonra mızrağın ucunu Kürtlere çevirdi. Böylece aldılar mazlumun ahını, öldürdüler milyonları. General Kazım Karabekir: “Giderken zo zo’ları, dönerken lo lo’ları temizleyeceğiz.”dedi. Gerçekten de önce Ermeniler, ardından Kürtler geldi. Bu ahı alanlar rahat edecekler mi? Milyonlarca Ermeninin ahı aheste aheste çıkmaz mı? Almanya katlettiği Yahudi halkından defalarca özür diledi. Türkiye ise, bu katliamı bir türlü kabul etmek istemiyor. Katilin haklılığı gibi bir davranış içindedir. Bir de katliamcı paşalarını onore ediyor. İttihat ve Terakki’nin Türk İslam sentezi bugün daha da katmerli sürdürülüyor.

Oysa Ermeniler topraklarında yaşayıp işinde gücünde olsalardı, ticaret, tarım ve endüstride ileri olan bu halk, Anadolu halklarına ışık tutacak onları aydınlatabilecekti. Gözü dönmüş Türk İslam sentezciler bunu göremezdi. Üstelik Türkiye; faşist, ırkçı Türk-İslam sentezini Kemalizm ile bütünleştirirken, dünyaya entegre olma olanağını da kaybediyor. 90 yıl önce Anadolu ve Mezopotamyadan Ermeni insanının çığlıkları yükseldi. En azından insan olan bu çığlığa saygılı olur. İzmir’de yaşayan Ermeni doktor, İstanbul’da sarraf, Bursa’da tüccar, Afyon’da manifaturacı, hatta Türk ordusunda subay, sanatçı, kültür insanı, dünyayı Türklerden daha iyi algılayan bu insanlar Ermeni oldukları için katledildiler. Turkey and France both refrain from signing a convention on the protection of minorities. A Council of Europe official warns Ankara it will feel the pressure during European Union negotiations, while Turkish officials point at Paris as an explanation for their opposition, saying Turkey honors its obligations under the Lausanne Treaty.

Turkey and France, whose paths are divergent on many issues in the European Union, from human rights standards to political criteria, are sticking to their guns over the ratification of a document on the protection of minorities.

Eight of 47 Council of Europe member states have refused to ratify the framework convention for the protection of national minorities. France and Turkey are the two countries that have never signed or ratified it.

"For both Turkey and France, it is difficult to reconcile the recognition of certain groups as minority groups with the principle of equality for all citizens irrespective of their ethnic,
linguistic, cultural and religious backgrounds," Alain Chablais, head of the Secretariat of the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities, told the Hurriyet Daily News & Economic Review in a telephone interview.

Turkey and France base their arguments on constitutional grounds and argue the signing of the document would jeopardize the principle of equality among their citizens.

Both countries say every citizen is free to have his own religion, language and cultural background, but argue it is not up to the state to recognize or provide official support for specific ethnic identities.

Less participation "We do not share that argument, because the framework convention sets equality and non-discrimination as key principles, which are also enshrined in many other treaties like the European Convention on Human Rights," said Chablais.

He said the convention also required state parties to take special measures in favor of disadvantaged minority groups to ensure they enjoyed equality with the majority in practice. Persons who belong to a minority are in a disadvantaged position in many fields, he said,
adding that they participate less in public and political life and they have few opportunities to be educated in their mother tongue. "This (applying special measures) is considered fully compatible with the principle of equality by most European states," said Chablais.

While opposing ratification of the convention, Turkey consistently says it honors its obligations stemming from the Lausanne Treaty, the founding document of the Turkish Republic, which provides that Armenians, Greeks and Jews are national minorities. Turkish authorities
also say its Constitution does not allow for a recognition of other minority groups, as that would create a different status more favorable to other ethnic groups and would violate the principle of equality among its citizens.

Copenhagen criteria

The convention on minorities did not exist at the time Turkey and France joined the Council of Europe. After the 10 founding member states including France, Turkey was one of the first countries to become a member in 1949, meaning there was no legally binding
commitment for the two to sign the convention. But European officials say Turkey will feel pressure to sign and ratify the convention as part of the EU negotiations.

"The signing of the convention is not part of the Acquis Communitaire, but is explicitly mentioned in the Copenhagen political criteria," said Chablais. Turkish officials, however, point to EU member France to explain their opposition.

"This is of course an understandable reply by Turkish authorities in theory, but if Turkey sincerely wishes to share European values and join the EU I think that is no longer a sustainable argument," said Chablais.

He said the exercise of fundamental rights and freedoms in the countries was tremendously different.

"In practice, France has a number of minority groups which enjoy education and language rights without any impediment, but in Turkey, you cannot put up street names in Kurdish for example, and you cannot open public schools that teach Kurdish. It is impossible." Aside from Turkey and France, Greece, Belgium, Iceland, Andorra, Monaco and Luxembourg have not ratified the convention on minorities.

Why a Kurdistan really?

The Kurdish question is a long and complicated history and it is one of the oldest stateless nations on earth is not what you need me to tell right now. There are more of them immediately displaced Palestinians than there were in 1948. Several thousands of them died in the slaughter which is operated by the Turkish army in the 1990s.

They stood and fought and died in large quantities. against the Baathists in Iraq when Saddam Hussein was our "bulwark against fundamentalist Iran." We owe them something.

That there is a historic Armenia in Kurdistan is well known, unfortunately, there was no majority Christians in the land, I wish it were so but it is, and has not been like that. However, we have AS MUCH right to Kurdistan as the Kurds.
According to me, I believe the Kurds can manage the Armenian soil best, the story has shown (although there are some Islamists in some villages).
The reason I believe that the Kurds have been throughout history, been open to all religions abrahamistiska except for certain occasions.

Turkey, we have seen treat Armenians, we were subjected to a genocide (one and half miljonav us were killed, also purchased Kurdish ashiret clans participated) and how they want to destroy our churches, not so long ago built a porn cinema in a Church and State granted this.

As one whose parents were Armenian subjects in the Ottoman Empire, I fully understand Leyla Zana's frustration with Turkey's persecution of its Kurdish population. But she deludes herself in hoping for the Turkish government's recognition of Kurdish identity.

Despite Turkey's denial, the Ottomans during World War I solved their "Armenian question" by perpetrating the first genocide of the century. Armenians fought for and established an independent republic in 1918. In 1920, Armenia was attacked and divided by Turkey and the Soviets. Armenia again gained its independence in 1991 when the Soviet Union collapsed.

The Treaty of Sèvres, signed Aug. 10, 1920, granted statehood to Armenia and Kurdistan. The treaty was not worth the paper upon which it was printed. The Kurds will never have recognition of their identity, surely not statehood, so long as historic Kurdistan is controlled by the likes of Turkey, Iran and Iraq. The Western powers and Russia could care less.

As a footnote, it is noted that the Ottomans during World War I instigated attacks by Kurds on Armenians. We might charitably attribute such acts to wartime conditions. In any event, I wish Mrs. Zana and the Kurdish people peace and security.

A message to Mr Hrant Dink mourners: Kurdish people are eager for reconciliation and peaceful respect between ethnicities

It was with sadness that I heard last week of the death of Hrant Dink, who worked courageously and tirelessly for a Turkey where understanding and acceptance of diverse cultures, and open dialogue between ethnicities would triumph, instead of the intractability from many sides which currently reigns.

Later that week, I was also saddened to read some articles on websites, statements which for me so missed the point of Hrant’s life and work. I refer to those that were tinged with an anger and hatred that seemed to reflect this intractability and betray movement toward honest and respectful dialogue, both between ethnic groups and with the state. These were marked by the kind of chauvinism which we see all too often in (ethnic) nationalist ideologies; focussing on Kurdish suffering, they do little to empathize with the plight of Armenians. In conclusion, one such article invited us to view grisly images, which, though tragically honest in their depiction of the brutality of the Turkish state, were out of place in the context of a memorial to one man’s life.

This week at the funeral of Mr. Dink, mourners, in the thousands, poured into Istanbul’s streets, carrying placards which read “We are all Armenians now”. Even this was critiqued in mocking tones. Some have cynically raised the question that it is not reasonable for Turks to now be claiming kinship with Armenians, since their very ancestors participated in the genocide of 1915. However, let us not question or condemn this act out of turn. Cannot people admit to their past transgressions, and does this not display a will for future peace? I am sure that it is not necessary to remind my Kurdish friends that there were some of our people who participated in the slaughter of their Armenian neighbours perpetrated by the Ottoman state, just as there were many Kurds who fought to protect and save Armenians, hiding them in their homes.

Reconciliation calls for honesty, and a real will to respect the memory and experience of others; to put aside hatreds, however justified; to acknowledge that we all have elements of good and bad. The symbolic power of this gesture – “We are all Armenians” – a gesture of openness, and yes, even empathy, must not be underestimated. Indeed, this sort of identification with ‘the other’ may represent the greatest hope we have seen for a long time in the battle to overcome inter-ethnic tensions in Turkey. The Turkish state has been accused of making hasty and false remarks of condolence which exploit the death of Mr. Dink; I think such statements are no less guilty of this charge.

While I try to understand and even empathize with life experience in which violence and oppression lead to such rage, I cannot see it as justified in this context. Some of us have tried, and should continue to reaffirm our commitment to working with our friends in the struggle for democracy and human rights of Kurdish people; this includes a responsibility to be honest, to give a viewpoint which is not entrenched in ideology, but in ideals. We should challenge some of our extreme point of views to bring about change through openness and goodwill.

Will such statements help to promote the spirit of respect and communication that Mr. Dink advocated, often alienating him from even many fellow Armenians? My fear is that they will have the opposite effect, and indeed might easily be dismissed by detractors as just so much fanatical ranting.

Worse still, they degrade the memory of Hrant Dink and his achievements, by flying in the face of all he worked for. Hrant Dink lived his life and pursued his work with a sense of goodwill and openness towards all, including those who had been responsible for the attempted extermination of his people. Surely we can honour his memory by continuing in this spirit, and in offering the same to our perceived adversaries.

Let us show the world that the Kurdish people are eager for such reconciliation and peaceful respect between ethnicities. Let us embrace the legacy that he left for us.

Fadl I

Al-Fadhl ibn Muhammad al-Shaddadi (also al-Fadl ibn Muhammad, Fadl ibn Muhammad, Fadlun ibn Muhammad, Fadhlun ibn Muhammad, or Fadl I was the Shaddadid emir of Arran from 985-1031. Of mixed Kurdish and Armenian ancestry, al-Fadhl was called "Fadhlun the Kurd" by ibn al-Athir and other Arabic historians. Al-Fadhl was the first Shaddadid emir to issue coinage, locating his mint first at Partav (Barda'a) and was later transferred to Ganja.

According to ibn al-Athir, al-Fadhl led an expedition against the Khazars around 1030 but was ambushed and had to flee. The Khazars reportedly killed 10,000 of his soldiers. Since the Khazar Khaganate had been destroyed in 969, it is unclear whether these Khazars were from a successor state or kingdom located in the Caucasus, were subjects of a Kipchak or Pecheneg ruler, or whether ibn al-Athir was mistaken or was using "Khazars" as a generic term for steppe people.

Al-Fadhl died in 1031 and was succeeded by Abu'l-Fath Musa.

First they preformed Turkish, Kurdish, Azerbaijani and Armenian songs. Later, the Kardeþ Türküler project broadened its repertoire to include songs from other cultures suchas Laz, Georgian, Circassian, Roma, Macedonian and Alevi.

Kurdên Ermenîstanê ji berê da li gundan ji lîstika topa ser bûzê ra digotin ”hola” ser bûzê. Di sondeke êzdîyan da jî gotina ”hol” tê bikaranînê: “Hol hola siltan Êzîdê Sor e”. Ev gotina ji îranî derbazî nava ermenkî bûye. Bi farisî ”hezar”, bi avêstayî ”hezerjra”, farisîya kevin ”hezehre”, hindîya kevin ”sehesre”, bêlûcî ”hezar”. Di ermenkî da bûye ”hazar”.

Comerd – Comard

Kurdish, Armenian to be taught at university

The lack of any Kurdish or Armenian language departments at universities does not mean it is not allowed, says the head of higher education watchdog, adding that if such a demand came from universities, the matter would be assessed.

Turkish universities offer in-depth knowledge of long-extinct civilizations of Sumerian, and Hittite culture, but none as yet has a department devoted to Kurdish and Armenian languages, or Hebrew. A recent proposal by the Democratic Society Party, or DTP, deputy Osman Özçelik to open a department on Kurdish language at Istanbul and Dicle universities has highlighted this deficit.

"If universities make such a proposal, we can discuss the issue with our friends and do what is necessary," President of Higher Education Board, or YÖK, Yusuf Ziya Özcan told daily Radikal.

A department on Armenian language and literature is expected to be launched next year at Nevşehir University. "At least three professors who can teach the subject are required before the department is operational. We are talking with professors in Turkey who wrote about Armenian literature," Nevşehir University Rector Filiz Kılıç told the Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review yesterday.

"A department on Armenian literature is a critical subject, and it is a long due project. Turkey should have had several similar departments long ago," Kılıç said.

"Classes will necessarily include particularities of the Armenian language and literature, but the specific content will be written once the professors start their job," she said."It is not clear whether the department will be ready for the 2009-2010 academic year, but we want to start it after adequate preparations," Kılıç said.

Nevşehir University has departments on Hebrew and literature as well, but the priority is now in making Armenian language and literature an operational department, Kılıç said. Greek language and literature has been taught at Istanbul University since 1983 and in Ankara University since 1936.

’No obstacle before Kurdish department’
The academic world received the demand to open Kurdish language and literature departments favorably, stressing that it could contribute to societal peace. Mardin Artuklu University Rector Serdar Bedii Omay said they had launched work to open a department at their own university and will submit the proposal to YÖK as soon as possible. Drawing attention to the importance of opening up such a department in terms of social peace, Omay said such a department would reap great benefits for the country.

Meanwhile, YÖK authorities noted that there was no constitutional hurdle against the proposal.

President of YÖK’s education committee Halis Ayhan argued that it is even a late decision. "The education language is determined as Turkish in the constitution, and as long as it does not contradict with the article of the constitution, I have no objection to opening such departments," he said.

Well-known for its Language, History and Geography Faculty, Ankara University is one of the institutions that reacted positively to the idea. "If our Language, History and Geography Faculty offers to open a department, we will work on the subject with pleasure," said Ankara University Rector Cemal Taluğ.

Two universities in east and southeast Anatolia, where the Kurdish population is high, also presented a positive stance on the subject. Hakkari University Rector İbrahim Belenli said he saw no harm in opening a Kurdish language department.

"A Kurdish language and literature department may be opened within our Faculty of Science and Letters. We don’t have the related faculty yet, however, when the laws to open the department are convenient and such a proposal is made within the university, I can submit it to YÖK," said Şırnak University Rector Ali Akmaz. Special courses in Kurdish were opened in recent past but none of the universities have a program on the Kurdish language.

the Aegean region and of Armenians in several regions of Turkey had continued as
before?"

The 90th anniversary of the betrayal of Armenia and the Assyrian/Suriani and
Kurdish nations in the Mudros Armstice (signed by Britain and Turkey on the
30th october 1918) was commemmorated this weekend in front of the Prime
Minister's home at 10 Downing Street, London and at the cenotaph.

Armenians, Assyrians and Kurds gathered to remind the signatory nations that
both countries have a heavy responsibility for the predicament of today's
Assyrians, thousands of whom live impoversished lives as refugees from Iraq in
Syria.

The speeches contained the following:
"The genocide of 1915 ensured that Tur Abdin, Hakari and other regions were
emptied of their Assyrian/Suriani population. Likeiwse for Armenians from Western
Armenia( Van, Bitlis, Moush, Erzurum etc)

Certainly .Turkey has a responsiblity to provide for the return of thousands
of Assyrian/Suriani Refugees and make a committment to some degree of
autonomy. This would provide another option for those currently languishing in
poverty in Syria.
The EU, and especially the UK has a responsibility to bear the financial cost of
this resettlement if Turkey is allowed membership.
We accuse Turkey of continuing cultural genocide, with the UK giovernment
deliberately looking the other way and complying with the crimes of its
strategic and financially lucrative ally

Dear Sirs,
This week we mark the nintieth anniversary of the Great Betrayal of
Armenians and Assyrians in the Mudros armstice with Turkey (30th october
1918). We ask you to consider what measures of restitution are suitable as
we believe that it was criminal of Britain to agree to the terms of the
armstice.The lack of a homeland for Assyrians and the continued Turkish
control of Western Armenia is a direct result of the armstice.The Assyrians
in particular have been subjected to subsequent massacres emanating from
Britain's hand in the creation of Iraq, a centralised state without
provision for the protection of minorities. It is indicative of our
selective amnesia about our past responsibilities that only two MPs have
signed the EDM on the 75th anniversary of the Simel massacre of Assyrians in
1933 soon after the end of the British Mandate.
The latest pogrom of Christian Assyrian and Armenian Christians in Mosul
two weeks ago must surely worry our consiences. We appeal to you not to
persist in ensuring that Britain continualy assumes the role of a Pontius
Pilate with respect to this problem
The continuing cultural Genocide in Turkey, with the descendants of
forcibly Islamized Armenians and Assyrians still living in fear of
disclosing their identities, and Armenian and Assyrian heritage
deliberately destroyed, must be addressed before Turkey makes any progress
towards EU membership.
We request a private meeting with you to discuss these matters. The
article below may refresh your memory concerning Britain's past dealings.

Enclosed are details of the nature of the betrayal
The Mudros Armstice(30th october 1918) did not contain
conditions on Armenia or the Assyrian homeland. It left the 6 Armenian villayets
under the
sovereignty of Turkey and no provision was made for the repartiation of
Armenian refugees and deportees to their homes.There was no occupation of
statregic points by the Allies and no provision for the release of women and
children. There was no disarming of the Turkish army.it would have been
possible to gain concessions surely from the Turks, as 3 out of 4 proposals
for peace from Turkish sources included concessions on Armenia.The armstice
was hastily signed in order to ensure that the victorious fleet sailing into
Constantinople would be commanded by a British rather than a French admiral!
In order to secure the Dardanelle straits, Palestine and Mesopotamia for
Britain, concessions were given to the Turks over Armenia.The draft terms of
the armstice were discussed in six war cabinet meetings. The British
priorities were set: there was no mention of Armenia at all.Almost all the
concesions made at Mudros were at the expense of the Armenians.The
conditions were set which eventually enabled the Turks to gain complete
control of Armenia and even gain part of "Russian" Armenia.
Balfour wrote the Supreme Council 's reply to the Turkish delegation in
july 1919. He characterised the "calculated atrocity" of the wartime Turkish
massacres as equalling or exceeding "anything in recorded history". Lord
Curzon, his successor as foreign secretary agreed that Turkish rule over the
subjrect races should no longer be allowed.
Activist Emily Robinson maintained that armstice terms had provided for
the return of all prisoners of war. Yet only male prisoners were released
and "about 100,000 Armenian women and children remained captives still" As a
result of her efforts, the League of Nations had appointed in 1920 three
commissioners to enquire into the conditions of these detainees.. In 1923
however in reply to her enquiries, the Foreign Office had written that the
Turks at Lausanne "refused to allow the work of the comission to continue".
She was outraged. This meant, she wrote to Canon J.A.Douglas that the Turks
have flouted the desicion of the League and that they had been upheld by the
victorious powers Grieved that the Allies would go to any lenth to secure
concessions to themselvesinstead of carrying out pledges to liberate Turkish
Armenia,she wrote"By betraying Armenia the Allies have
destroyed not only faith in themselves but in other things as well"

During The Paris Peace Conference Britain behaved shamefully towards the
Assyrians, preventing two of their delegations from attending the
conference.

Enough With This Turkey!

On the occasion of the Dersim Conference held at European Parliament on November 13, 2008, five Brussels organisations belonging to different communities coming out from Turkey have issued the following joint declaration:

For three millennium, Anatolia has been the homeland or have passed through it countless people. It is a land where coexisted and coexist today Armenians, Assyrians, Greeks, Arabs, Kurds, Turks, Jews, Zazas, as well as a number of other minorities such as Lazes, Circassians, Pomaks, Yörüks, and others.

Certain of these people and the majority have adopted the Apostolic Christianity, others have converted to Roman Catholicism or Orthodoxy, some became Nestorians or Chaldeans; while others turned Sunni Muslims, Shiites or Alevi Muslims; and still others remained Yezidis or Mazdeists or kept their shamanic beliefs.

This coexistence naturally led to disputes - sometime very violent - but it led also and above all to a cultural closeness and to an ethnic intermingling which challenge all ideologies that are based on racial or linguistic purity: today, the overwhelming majority of Turkey's inhabitants are of mixed origins.

However, the Ottoman Empire and then after it the Kemalist republic have artificially reshaped the land's multy-ethnic identity by reducing the dominated people into slavery, by denying their identity, and then by promoting the doctrine of the Turkish "race" as the "essential being". This fascist like thinking has led the authorities perpetrate abominable mass murders such as:

* The Armenian and Assyro-Chaldean Genocide (1915-1916)

* The Koçkiri massacre of Kurds, Alevis and Kizilbachs (1919-1921)

* The brutal expulsion of Greeks (1923-1924)

* Massacres of Kurds and Assyrians after the revolt of Sheikh Said (1925-1928)

* The Dersim Massacre of Kurds, Alevis and Kizilbachs (1935-1938)

* The iniquitous laws and the deportations of Armenians, Jews and Greeks (1942)

* Pogroms of lstanbul and Izmir against Greeks, Armenians and Jews (1955)

* War against Kurds (since 1984)

It has to be recalled, that since its creation, the Kemalist republic targets and represses all political opponents to the regime, whatever their ethnic origin, including Turkish democrats.

Lastly, the ultranationalist and genocide denial policies of Ankara utilise the Turkish immigrants in the European countries and with the complicity of certain local European political leaders incite them to hatred towards the Armenian, Assyrian and Kurdish communities.

Facing this ideology to hate and its bloody consequences, the peoples of Anatolia:

* Rebuke the idea of any racial of religious supremacy and reaffirm their indefectible attachment to the individual fundamental rights of all the Turkish citizens as well as to the collective rights of the people living in this State;

* Reject the fiction of a monolithic Turkey as extolled by the Turkish State and, on the contrary, call upon the State to pride on the ethnic wealth and diversity of the Anatolian people;

* Ask again the Turkish State to rehabilitate itself in rehabilitating the victims of its past exactions, in committing itself on the path of the political recognition of these exactions and in giving an end to their denial or glorification;

* Proclaim their conviction that the incapacity of Turkey to progress on the path of democracy, as well as the state of economical and social backwardness of its eastern provinces are closely linked to the war conducted by this State towards its own citizens;

* Reaffirm their commitment to keep on the political struggle so that Turkey recognize, denounce and disassociate from its past and present crimes; to transform it into a democratic State which would respect its minorities as its various political forces, united in their diversity.

Turkey-US ties strengthened after World War II. During cold war, Turkey became one of the major allies of the Unites States in a fight against enlargement of the Soviet Union and socialist bloc to West. At that time, US rendered economic and military assistance to Turkey. Instead, Turkey took part in the Armed Forces in Korean war in 1950-1953. In 1952, Turkey was admitted to NATO, military wing of Western bloc led by US. In 1954, Turkey permitted US to build Injirlik military base in its territory. This base played a great role during cold war, first war in the Gulf and the Iraqi war.

In 1980s and 1990s, Turkey-US relations further enhanced and in 1991 Turkey supported US to a great extent in the first Gulf war. However, so-called claim of “Armenian genocide” that appeared during these years caused political tension in US-Turkey relations. When US wanted to use Turkish territory for intervention into Iraq in 2003, Turkey answered in the negative which evoked a big tension between the two countries. However, there has been a thaw in Turkey-US relations since 2007. Kurdish Labor Party and so-called Armenian genocide are the most vulnerable issues in Turkey-US ties.

Turkey is concerned over certain statements made by US President barrack Obama during election campaign. In particular, Turkey is concerned over Obama’s pro-Armenian approach to the issue of “Armenian genocide”. Mehelli said there is a reason for concerns. “During election campaign Obama said he recognizes “Armenian genocide” and gave consent in a written form that he will raise this question in the Congress.

Obama’s Political position does not coincide with that of Turkey not only is the issue of genocide, but also in the issue of Kurds, he said. Mehelli attributed Obama’s different position to the people around him. “Vice President Joseph Biden has good relations with Armenian lobby and has a great sympathy for Kurds. His position can cause problems in US-Turkey relations in future,” Mehelli said.

Shanli Bahadir Koch, Strategic Studies Center for the United States said Obama’s attitude towards Armenian and Kurdish lobby can lead to a political tension between then two countries. The most alarming issue is Obama’s position towards the so-called “genocide”. There are some alarming points in Obama’s position towards Kurds as well. If Obama pulls out US troops from Iraq in a short-term period as he promised, in order to hinder Turkey to intervene into North Iraq, he will demand Turkey to recognize Kurdish administration in Iraq and establish good relations. Excluding “genocide” and issue of Kurds, there are many points in Obama’s foreign policy coinciding with that of Turkey. “Obama’s efforts to solve Near East and Iraq problems through dialogue fully coincide with the political position of Turkey, Koch said to TrendNews by telephone from Ankara.

European expert Svante Cornell believes that Obama’s foreign policy line will depend on a team he will choose. “One can analyze Obama’s foreign policy after he appoints the secretaries of departments,” Kornel said to TrendNews by telephone from Stokholm. He said US presidential candidates always make such statements during election campaign. However, they act on the base of realities after they assume office.

Kurdish leader Ocalan has been in the Imali prison for 10 years for a
conspiracy and has been treated violently. Recently, there are more
threats that the Turks are ready to exterminate him. As a state,
Turkey is no different from the prison. This time the violence is
aimed not only at one person, but also the Kurds, who have found
themselves as hostages and have rose to defend their leader from
possible encroachments," said protester Emij Elyan.

The protesters moved towards the UN office where they handed the
statement made by the "Kurdistan" committee of Armenia stating the
following:

"We call on all humanity, states and international organizations

We Stand For The Brotherhood Of The Peoples Of The World

In addition to the Kurds, there are Armenians and Assyrians living in Kurdistan. The invasion and occupation of their lands have adversely affected all three constituent peoples. The implementation of divide and rule policies have resulted in internal feuding. The natives of millenniums have fought one another and forced each other to migrate.

A most telling example of this policy was put into action in 1915. For a few years, we were provoked to kill one another in order to benefit our self-appointed leaders.

On April 24, 1915, the Ottoman administrators began a policy of annihilating the Armenians and the Assyrians. This was a plan long in the making, meticulously carried out with the aid of some tribal Kurds who were organized into an auxiliary force, the 'Hamidiye Alaylari' or Hamidiye Brigades, of the Istanbul government.

Today, a similar force has been established, the 'Koy Koruculari' or village guards. In that singular act of brutality at the turn of the century, millions of Armenians, Assyrians, and
Kurds were murdered and many more were forced to embrace the coldness of diaspora.

The policy of divide and rule has been inherited by the new Turkish government in Ankara. The same hideous crimes are now inflicted on the Kurds.
At times, the Kurdish religious communities are provoked into fighting one another, as the Alevis and Sunnis do from time to time. A more sinister plan is the empowerment of an
auxiliary force of mercenary Kurds to fight against their fellow Kurds who are on the side of freedom and liberty. New chapters of blood and pain, suffering and migration are written daily in the history of Turkey.

A cursory look at the history of the Ottomans reveals more about the nature of the Turkish state's practices. In Asia Minor, historians tell us, there were once vibrant societies, different
languages, and various cultures. Today, there are no vestiges left of these communities. A similar policy is now in the works for Kurdistan: Some Kurds are killed, many are legally and forcibly made to become Turks, and more are forced to flee in an attempt to end the way of life which is known as Kurdistan.

As the Chair of the Executive Council of the Parliament of Kurdistan in Exile, a representative body of the Kurds in diaspora, I am urging the world public opinion not to let history repeat itself and not to remain silent to the annihilation of the Kurds.

Tomorrow is the 80th anniversary of the massacres of the Armenians and the Assyrians. Let history note that we at the Parliament of Kurdistan in Exile share the pain of the survivors
and their relations. We unequivocally denounce the act and condemn the perpetrators of this inhumanity, the Ottomans and their collaborators of the Kurdish auxiliary forces. We urge you all to do the same.

Armenians of Mosul - Southern Kurdistan

Most of the Armenians originally came from Iran and first settled in the southern part of Iraq. While they have been moving into Iraq for several centuries, the largest movement of Armenian people came during the early twentieth century as they fled the persecution of the Armenian Genocide.

It is estimated that there are about 20,000 Armenians living in the entire country with communities in Baghdad, Mosul, Basra, Kirkuk and Dohuk.

Around 15.000 Assyrians have left Mosul the last month because of attacks from fundementalists and terrorists (the city is in the middle of iraqi Kurdistan and Iraq).

This was published in Panorama last week about the Armenians in Mosul during this attacks:

The situation in Mosul city, Iraq is calmed down and 40 Armenian families living in the city and the Armenian Church are not under threat, said Tigran Balayan, the head of public relations department of the Foreign Ministry of Armenia. “We are in contact with the church and we know that the Government sent military forces to defend local people,” said T. Balayan.

Remind that on Sunday Armenian businessman Farkes Batul was murdered in the aftermath of extremists’ attack.

On Dec. 7, 2004, an armed group of commandos stormed an Armenian Catholic church in Mosul, ushered everyone out of the building, then detonated two bombs, reducing the church to rubble. Some two hours later, a group of armed men attacked the Chaldean bishop's residence in another part of the city.

During the Persian Gulf War, of the 1,500 Armenians living with the predominant Kurd population in the northern town of Zakho, three soldiers serving in Saddam Hussein's military were killed in coalition air strikes in Kuwait, Basra, and Mosul, respectively.

Many Armenian fled to southern Kurdistan, Mosul during the Armenian genocide in 1915. Here is one story from a surviver that fled to Mosul:

An Armenian woman Mariam Sepan Sarkismeherian said that her family was originally from Dehe in Armenia, and had fled to Mosul after the 1915 genocide.Only her father survived from his whole family. They all said that they were too afraid to go back to Mosul. Even if things improve, the terrorists will always come back, because they want the “Christian infidels” to leave. Many of the people said that they would be willing to go to Europe if they were accepted.

Avzrok - Armenian village in southern Kurdistan

Avzarok in Kurdish) is a village in the Iraqi province of Dohuk. The village is split into two areas: one populated by Armenians and the other by Assyrians. The name of the village comes from the Kurdish language; av - water and zrog - yellow.

It was built for the first time in 1932 when the Armenians of Zakho and its suburbs decided to establish the village and settle in it. The village was subject of destruction in 1975. The Armenian inhabitants of Avzrog don't speak Armenian. They use Arabic and Kurdish languages instead. Despite this, Armenians in Avzrog maintain their Armenian social identity like folklore and names. Avzrog has a total population of about 300 people.
The village of Avzrog is located in the Sulaivany area in the western part of Dohuk. The Sulaivany area is situated between Sumail and the mountains south of Zakho. Avzrog is 30 km from Zakho.
It was built for the first time in 1932 when the Armenians of Zakho and its suburbs decided to establish the village and settle in it.

The village was destroyed in 1975 and the people were forced to flee. They were replaced by Arab tribes as a part of the arabization policy of Saddam Hussein’s regime. The arabisation policy was concentrated in the region of Sulaivany.

Following 1991, with northern Iraq out of control of the central regime protected by the UN and administered by a local government, the Arab tribes fled the region and went back to their original homes, mainly south of Mosul.

The Armenian inhabitants of Avzrog don't speak Armenian. They use the Kurdish language. Despite this, Armenians in Avzrog maintain their Armenian social identity like folklore and names.

Avzrog has a total population of about 300 people.

Mıgırdiç Margosyan is a Armenian author from Amêd, northern Kurdistan (Diyarbakir).
He's most famous book “Gâvur Mahallesi” (Infidel Quarter) is a book about the Armenians in Amêd. His book Gavur Mahallesi was translated into Kurdish and published in 1999 with the title Li ba me, Li wan deran by Avesta Publishing in Istanbul.

Margosyan was born in 1938 in the Hançepek district of Diyarbakır (Amêd).
He received his primary education at the Suleyman Nazif İlkokulu and Ziya Gökalp Ortaokulu in Diyarbakır, and continued his secondary education at the Armenian community schools in Istanbul, attending Bezciyan Ortaokulu and Getronagan Lisesi. Margosyan received his college degree from the Philosophy Department of the Faculty of Letters at the Istanbul University.Between 1966-1972, Margosyan worked as the school director of the Surp Haç Tıbrevank Armenian High School and also taught philosophy, psychology, Armenian language and literature. Later he left teaching and started commercial activities.

The mayor of the southeastern city of Diyarbakır was acquitted yesterday of charges of publishing the 6th Culture and Art Festival's invitation cards in Kurdish, Zaza, English and Armenian in addition to Turkish, the Anatolia news agency reported.

“Municipalities invite people to that kind of festival in languages other than Turkish,” said Diyarbakır Mayor Osman Baydemir's lawyer, Muharrem Erbey, in his defense. Many municipalities in Turkey organize that kind of festival, Erbey said and demanded Baydemir's acquittal, saying Baydemir's behavior illustrates his respect for Anatolian civilization.

On Wednesday, October 10th, the United States House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs approved a resolution describing the killing of Armenians by the Ottoman Empire during World War I as an act of genocide in a 27-21 voting. The United States House Foreign Affairs Committee adopted the resolution the following day. The KNC-NA regards this as an important event in eliminating denial and recognizing the truth of the crimes committed against humanity.

We, the Kurdish National Congress of North America (KNC-NA), would like to congratulate the Armenian National Committee of America and other Armenian Communities for their success in spreading awareness and achieving their goal of convincing the US representatives to recognize the genocide.

The members of the KNC-NA believe in the rights of all nations and peoples and the continued strive for liberties and peace. We hope that this recent event will lead to pressures on the Turkish Republic to recognize all past and present atrocities against Armenians, Assyrians, Kurds and other groups and will change its direction to eventually find and implement peace and democracy. Although the recent resolution has no binding effect on the U.S. foreign policy, we hope that the recognition of the Armenian Genocide will not only serve as justice for the

Compare the 1915 genocide of Armenians (a Christian minority within the Ottoman /Muslim Empire) with the massacres of the Kurds under Iraqi leadership.

What if, instead of slavery, the United States had murdered all of the African Americans? What if, instead of relocating some Native American tribes, they were completely wiped out? This annihilation is essentially what happened with the Armenians in the early 1900's and the Kurds in the 1980's.

The histories of both the Armenians and the Kurds have similarities. Both the Armenians and the Kurds have lived in their homelands for a long time. By the 12th century AD, the land of current Iraq was known as Kurdistan. The Armenians are identified by the 6th century BC. Both groups have been a struggling minority, but the Kurds have always rebelled, while the Armenians have been more passive. The Armenians have been dominated and suppressed from Persians, Muslims in the 7th century, to Seljuk Turks and Turcomens in the 13th and 14th century. This ruined the land and destroyed the state of Armenia. In the 16th century, the Armenians came under the control of the Ottoman Empire Turks. The Kurds in Iraq have also been dominated by the Persian Empire and the Ottoman Empire, and neither of these groups would take in the Kurds.

Another similarity between the two groups is the constant subjugation and terrors they underwent before their specific genocide. Besides being lesser people, not allowed to have weapons for any purpose, the Armenians were forced to leave their homes, so that Armenia could be a more Turkish state. Persians, Kurds, and other peoples moved into the Armenian lands. This mass migration, and re-population of Armenian lands by other people (Persians, Kurds, etc.) before what is considered the genocide corresponds to a similar eradication of Kurds from their homes in 1975. The Kurds had been promised an autonomous state at the Treaty of Sevres, after the Ottoman Empire collapsed. But, Britain wanted the oil in Kurdish lands, so those areas were left out of their promised land. After Saddam Hussein came to power, he promised the Kurds an autonomous state, but once again, the oil fields which were rightful Kurdish lands, were left out of the deal. The main Kurdish revolters, Bzarni and his followers, claimed their land. Iraq, in return, changed the boundaries of countries to give Arabs a majority. This futher supported Saddam and undermine the Kurds. Bazarni and his men, the peshmerga, would not accept these terms.

In 1983, Iraq went to war with Iran. Iraq had claimed a river bank on Iranian soil which led to a decade of fighting and millions killed. The USA reluctantly supported Iraq's secular leader rather than Iran's Islamic extreamist government but they were sympathetic to the plight of the Kurds. The Kurdish Democratic Party along with the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, fought with Iran, against their own country during the Iran/Iraq war. Iran provided the Kurds with weapons, funds, and medical help, in exchange for the PUK's help in destroying the Ba'ath party and Suddam Hussein. Although the PUK had at first been against the KDP and it's siding with Iran, the destruction of their land during the war by the Ba'ath party, forced the PUK to join arms with Iran to protect themselves, and keep the hope and fight of the Kurds alive. The Kurds accrued the help of the United States and Iran to aid in their own revolt against Iraq. When Iraq finally promised Iran partial control of the waterway to end the war, Iran withdrew aid to the peshmerga. The USA, not wanting war with Iraq, also ended its covert assitance of the Kurdish rebellion. Because of Kurdish 'treason' to the country by crawling to foreign powers for help, Saddam gassed the Kurds and forced the survivors to leave their homes. To make Iraq have a more Arab population, the Kurds were sent to houses far away from one another, in the middle of the desert, with no way to provide for themselves. Their old homes were destroyed, and different people were moved into their lands.

Another similarity between these two groups is that they tried to get help from foreign powers. The Armenians took advantage of the fact that European powers were beginning to trade with the Middle East, and they tapped into the trade. This gave them money, rejuvenated them as a people, and sponsored education. Because the Armenians had contacts in Europe, they appealed to fellow Christians for help against the Muslim Turks who were endangering their lives. The Turks blamed their shrinking empire on European powers who had bypassed the dying Ottoman Empire in their global trade. The Turks took their rage out on the Armenians, who were friendly with the Europeans. Like Hilter, who blamed the Jews for Germany's ills, the Muslim Turks blamed the Christian Armenians for their own self imposed destruction. This is why the Turks committed such an appaling genocide.

The largest genocide against the Armenians took place in 1915. It had many similarities with the main genocide against the Kurds in 1987-89, a campaign known as Anfal. One similarity is that both the parties responsible for the genocides, killed off the men. The Turks summoned all the Armenians who were in the army, and had them killed, blaming them for their war troubles. Next, they rounded up the important men in society, the clergy, newspaper editors, and other tradesmen, and had them executed. In Iraq, the men gathered from the prohibited areas the government set up, and those captured after a village was destroyed, were killed if they were between 15 and 70 years old. The main way of annihilation in the Armenian genocide was the Turks forcing the Armenians to leave their homes. The Turks used deportation to do the killing. They forced the Armenians to march for a long way, and allowed Turks and Kurds to rape, abduct, kill, and steal from the many Armenians marching through the countryside. Many died of starvation, murder, and exposure. Those who finally made it to the forced destination, the desert, were put in camps and died or were killed.

The Anfal campaign against the Kurds used deportation as well, but in a different way. Anfal considered everyone who was living in the 'prohibited areas' to be peshmerga, whether or not, they were actually in a guerilla rebellion group. The Ba'ath party usually attacked a city first with chemical bombs, then sent in militia to destroy everything and round up the inhabitants of the villages for removal to camps for processing. The men and teenage boys were separated, and most of the men were killed in mass shootings. The women and children were sent to different camps and prisons.

The survivors of both genocides continue to suffer. The Armenian population decreased by over a million, while the Kurdish population had lost 50-100 thousand at least. The Armenian generation and their children were left in poverty. The many Kurds that were exposed to chemical gases, are suffering from many diseases and cancers. The Kurdish population has a huge decrease in its' male population. Widows and children are left alone, and many women can no longer have children because of effects of the chemical attacks. In both cases, the world has largely sat by and watched. Americans sent food, medical, and educational assistance to the Armenians. They also pressured Turkey, her long time ally during the cold war, into reversing the policies toward the Armenians. The world has also done little to help the Kurds. In fact, the when the United States aided Iraq in the war against Iran, it indirectly helped Iraq in it's campaign against the Kurds. When Saddam invaded Kuwait, the Bush administration supported another uprising by the Kurds against Saddam, and did enforce a no-fly zone in northern Iraq as they fought Desert Storm to remove Iraq from Kuwait. The sanctions against Iraq following the US led victory granted the Kurds a protected land. The no-fly zone was only partially effective against Saddam's renewed retailiation against the Kurds. It was not until Saddam's capture that a lawful return of the Kurds was attempted by US coallition forces in spite of Arab opposition.

So, unwanted minorities are murdered. The Kurds and the Armenians genocide are alike in several ways. They were both persecuted long before their genocides, the genocides included the killing off of the male population and deporting the people away from their homes, and the horrors continue to plague the Armenians and Kurds. What must be done to prevent these types of atrocities from being committed? If everyone followed God's commandments, it would be fairly simple: Love your neighbor as yourself (Matt 22:39).

Armenian genocide and the Kurdish involvement

On the 8th July 2008 the solidarity and cooperation which has been prevalent between Kurdish and Armenian groups prompted them to arrange a meeting to outline clearly some of the main points in respect of the Kurdish involvement in Armenian genocide. This meeting took place at Portcullis House in London (which houses the offices of Members of Parliament). The main speaker was Kurdish historian Professor Kamal Mazhar Ahmad and imminent Kurdish expert and writer Dr Rebwar Fatah. The involvement of Professor Ahmad academically on this issue is well known internationally. He is an architect of Kurdish contemporary history who has a firm grasp of wide ranging issues relevant to the Kurdish history of the past, present and future. His contribution to the case of the Armenian genocide of 1915 is one of the most important contributions he has made through his book ‘Kurdistan during the First World War’ with one chapter devoted to this case. This particular chapter has formed the basis of the research conducted by Kurdish scholar Simand Osman in his Masters degree in France Before we go into further detail of what happened in this period of history I would first like to explain the meaning of genocide as defined by the United Nations.

The definition of genocide

The United Nations 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide legally defines genocide as, ‘any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such: killing members of the group; causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.’ (Article 2).

Kurdish involvement

Armenia is one of the nations in the Middle East which has some similarities and solidarities with Kurdish people. The Armenian and Kurdish nations have been living side by side through the centuries with both nations being without any independent state for a long time and who have been under occupation for considerable time. These good relations go back to the time of the Medes around the 6th Century BC. The Kurdish and Armenian land over this time has been partitioned into Iran, Turkey and some parts of Russia. Both had a great deal of suffering under the hands of occupiers and invaders. For example, in the war between the Ottoman Empire and the Russian Caucasus Army at Sarikamis tens of thousands of Armenians were displaced from the land of their fathers and grandfathers.

The only other main factors differentiating the Kurdish and Armenian nations at present are:

1. Religion – the majority of Armenians are Christian whereas the majority of Kurds are Sunni Muslims.

2. Advancement of nations – Armenian passed through the slavery stages before the Kurds and as a result is a more advanced civilized nation today.

The control of the Ottoman Empire across the regions covering the north, south, east and west of Kurdistan are the main reasons for all the atrocities taking place in those regions. The Ottoman Empire not only bullied non-Turkish nations in that area but also tried to attack other colonies in the region including the British and French. The most vivid example of this was the Treaty of Sevres of 10th August 1920 between France, England and Turkey which promised an independent state to the Kurds but was soon replaced by the Treaty of Lausanne of 1923 in favour of the Turkish state. To summarise, both the Kurds and Armenians suffered greatly under the rule of the Ottoman Empire.

The atrocities taking place when the Turks discovered that Armenian nationalists were seeking an independent state and separation from the Turkish state resulting in the Turks doing everything possible to demolish and demoralise the meaning of nationalism for the Armenians and therefore they used the Kurds as a tool to deliver and convey such atrocities. Kurdish feudalists were hungry for money, land and assets. The Kurdish feudalists and the backwards sections of the Kurds were involved with these atrocities without any attention to nationalism.

As Professor Ahmad elaborated in his book; ‘The injustices perpetrated by the Kurdish aghas against the Armenian farmers were actually much greater that those suffered by the Kurdish Muslim peasant, and weighed heavily on them. Kurdish aghas were helped greatly in this by circumstances, especially as Sultan Abdul Hamid openly encouraged them, connived at their wrongdoing, and even gave them money and material aid to take over the land of others’ (Ahmad, 1994, p.148). This trend not only destroyed the Armenian nationalists’ hopes and dreams for an independent state but also slandered the Kurdish reputation. Other than this, no other conflicts between the Kurdish nationalists and Armenian parties and groups were evident at that time. However, we are not deterred by such comments which exist with regard to the Kurdish involvement in Armenian atrocities for several reasons;

1. The people involved have not represented Kurdish nationalism or the groups of parties. The people involved in those atrocities are people hungry for money, land and state. We can find it in any nationality anywhere in the world.

2. The past two decades have been characterised by the Anfal campaign against Kurds (Kurdish genocide) which have been carried out by the Iraqi nationalist state against the Kurdish people with almost 182,000 killed. Such operations have been carried out by corrupt people in Iraq and by the Iraqi state which has used traitors to carry out the destroying, killing and massacring of Kurdish villages and civilians of these villages, including children, regardless of their sex, age, etc.

To date, the Kurdish people in the south of Kurdistan hold the authorities and the former regimes responsible for these atrocities, not the Arab people who have been living side by side with them for centuries in this region.

3. Not surprisingly, the Kurds and Armenians view this historical event differently and are willing to put aside any doubts or problems in their previous relationship in order to gain more understanding of what happened in the past with the aim to maintain good relations in the future. As my colleague Dr Ara Nahabedian commented, much of Armenian literature indicates that it was too late to restore the harmonious relationship which existed between many Kurds and Armenians regarding this period in history due to the provocation of this relationship by the Turks and the subsequent blaming of the Kurds by the Turks. However, the evidence we have considered indicates that is never too late for changes to take place. We need a clean and robust integration throughout this issue. How can it be possible for the Kurds to be blamed and to suffer the same fate as the Armenians in the hands of the Turks? I am not trying to undermine any attempt to achieve a coherent and integrated communication.

Finally as Professor Ahmad indicates at the end of his chapter on this issue, ‘the Armenians were merely victims of the short-sightedness of men in authority and of the machinations and designs of the great powers, which emerged more clearly after the First World War had ended’ (Ahmad, 1994, p.175).

Adnan Kochar, the head of CHAK (Centre of Helebce against the Anfalisation and Genocide of Kurdish People) suggested something interesting in a Armeno-Kurdish conference held in the UK parliament.

Adnan said that they should write a letter to the KRG government (Kurdistan Regional Government in south Kurdistan) to ask for official recognition of the Armenia/Assyrian genocide that took place in 1915 and also a letter to the Armenian government to ask for official recognition of the Kurdish genocide (Anfal-campaign) in 1988.
Several Kurdish associations around Europe has already showned interest to support the suggestion that Adnan made.

The new co-operation between Armenian, Assyrian and Kurdish groups has facilitated this event:

When: 2.00 p.m. on Tuesday, 8th July

The speakers will be eminent Kurdish historian Prof Kamal Mazhar Ahmad and eminent Kurdish expert and writer Dr Rebwar Fatah.

That this House urges the Government to recognise formally the genocide of Assyrians and Armenians under the Young Turk regime in Ottoman Turkey during 1915 to 1923; and welcomes the co-operation between groups representing the Armenian and Assyrian peoples, joined also by groups representing the Kurdish people who have also suffered genocide, in jointly working to encourage the whole international community to recognise the atrocities perpetrated against their respective peoples as genocide.
